Emergence of classicality via decoherence described by Lindblad operators.

چکیده
Zurek, Habib, and Paz @Phys. Rev. Lett. 70, 1187 ~1993!# have characterized the set of states of maximal stability defined as the set of states having minimum entropy increase due to interaction with an environment and shown that coherent states are maximal for the particular environment model examined. To generalize these results, I consider entropy production within the Lindblad theory of open systems, treating environment effects perturbatively. I characterize the maximally predicitive states that emerge from several forms of effective dynamics, including decoherence from spatially correlated noise. Under a variety of conditions, coherent states emerge as the maximal states.

متن کاملDecoherence and the (non)emergence of classicality
We prove that, regardless of the Hamiltonian, decoherence of subsystems in a preferred “pointer” basis does not occur for generic quantum states. This shows that the widespread belief that decoherence explains the emergence of classicality is incorrect, and that the emergence of classicality is only to be expected for a very small set of states.
متن کاملQuantum decoherence and classical correlations of the harmonic oscillator in the Lindblad theory
In the framework of the Lindblad theory for open quantum systems we determine the degree of quantum decoherence and classical correlations of a harmonic oscillator interacting with a thermal bath. The transition from quantum to classical behaviour of the considered system is analyzed and it is shown that the classicality takes place during a finite interval of time. We calculate also the decohe...
متن کاملSelf-Induced Decoherence and the Classical Limit of Quantum Mechanics
In this paper we argue that the emergence of the classical world from the underlying quantum reality involves two elements: self-induced decoherence and macroscopicity. Self-induced decoherence does not require the openness of the system and its interaction with the environment: a single closed system can decohere when its Hamiltonian has continuous spectrum. We show that, if the system is macr...
متن کاملThe quantum-to-classical transition: Bohr’s doctrine of classical concepts, emergent classicality, and decoherence
It is now widely accepted that environmental entanglement and the resulting decoherence processes play a crucial role in the quantum-to-classical transition and the emergence of “classicality” from quantum mechanics. To this extent, decoherence is often understood as signifying a break with the Copenhagen interpretation, and in particular with Bohr’s view of the indispensability of classical co...
